"Where Do They Come From, and How Are They Trained?" Professional Education and Training of Access Services Librarians in Academic Libraries
Krasulski, Michael J.
Journal of Access Services, v11 n1 p14-29 2014
Since the late 1970s, the access services librarian or equivalent position has become commonplace in academic libraries, and degreed professionals have been sought for these positions since the beginning. In 2009, David McCaslin, California Institute of Technology, examined the place of access services in American Library Association-accredited library and information science graduate programs. He found no evidence that any accredited program offered a class in access services. In his article, he wondered, "Where do they come from, and how are they trained?" I developed a survey to answer this question. This article reports the results of that survey, which analyzed the career experiences of 151 access services librarians in academic libraries. The survey reveals the education, training, and experience required to perform the duties of the position. This study confirms the existence of a gap in library graduate education found by McCaslin, determines where access services librarians come from and how they are trained, and offers several recommendations, including ways the access services community can act to fill the gap left by the absence of training opportunities in library and information science graduate programs.
