Preferred Characteristics and Diversity of Top Leadership Teams in a Christian School
Carman, R. Randall
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Indiana Wesleyan University
An organization's top leadership team is responsible for the actions and performance of that organization. Upper echelon theory (Hambrick & Mason, 1984) suggests that the top leadership team has the greatest influence upon the strategies for achieving performance and the effectiveness of organizational results. This study seeks to examine the importance of top leadership team diversity in the Christian school and explores what common and diverse characteristics are important in members. The researcher utilized a qualitative heuristics approach employing qualitative interviewing, a questionnaire, and a survey with members of the board, top administrative leadership team, faculty, and pastoral staff at a Christian school in the Midwest. Results for both Christian school leadership teams were consistent. The study found that the respondents care greatly about the composition of their top administrative leadership team. They believe the team members should have some key required common characteristics of faith in Christ, passion for the mission of the school and experience and competency in a school setting. They believe that the diversity of many factors of the top leadership team is important to the decision-making and overall functioning of the school. They are divided and possibly unsure as to how finding God's best leaders for the school and hiring for diversity of the top leadership team fit together. The results present concepts for further investigation into both the diversity of top leadership team diversity in Christian school education and upper echelon theory as it applies to education.
