The Best Kept Secret in Gifted Education

It is perhaps one of the best-kept secrets in educating gifted high school youth, and yet for 45 years, Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) has been going strong, "Motivating Tomorrow's Leaders Today." After spending nine inspirational days in 1958 with Albert Schweitzer (Nobel Prize physician and philosopher) at his clinic in the African jungle, actor Hugh O'Brian founded this organization. Since then, HOBY has become a recognized and respected program in youth leadership development. Beginning with high school sophomores, HOBY teaches students "how" to think, not "what" to think. Their core experience is a three- or four-day seminar in which students interact with panels of leaders in business, education, government, humanities, sciences, and media--successful mentors from every key discipline in the public and private sectors. During these give-and-takes, the young leaders are challenged to hone their questioning skills, critical thinking, and problem solving. Panels at more than 60 HOBY Leadership Seminars held across the country each spring typically cover these mandated topics: (1) entrepreneurship; (2) volunteerism/service; (3) government; (4) education; and (5) media and communications. In addition to this intellectual stimulation, HOBY includes a strong "Leadership for Service" (L4S) component by which students engage in community service and civic education. They apply their leadership, entrepreneurship, and thinking skills to helping others through projects ranging from feeding the homeless to community beautification.
