In this article, the author shares his funny experience of using biblical quotation in Hebrew during a debate which he attributed to be of William Brickman's influence and his first encounter with him. The biblical quotation brings to his mind the most vivid memory he has of Bill Brickman. He used it during a debate he had with a modern-day Noah--namely, Harold Noah. The debate was to focus on the proposed resolution: "Resolved that Comparative Education should have a major role in the preparation of teachers." The debate was to be entertaining, if not entirely serious. He began his piece with a laudatory description of the field's role in preparing the minds of educators and making them critical thinkers. He moved his argument gradually toward criticizing those who would degrade their own field to achieve popularity by catering to fads a la mode. He then abruptly uttered Genesis 9:20 in Hebrew to draw his audience's close but quizzical attention. However, before he was able to give the translation, an enormous, ground-shaking roar of laughter burst out from one point in the huge room. The source of the ground-shaking laughter at his biblical quotation in Hebrew was none other than William W. Brickman. Fluent in several languages, including Hebrew, and a prodigious scholar of history and philosophy, with expert knowledge of the Hebrew Bible, Brickman immediately recognized the quotation as he presented in the original. The Noachian disputation was not his first encounter with Brickman. His next encounter with Brickman was at the 1976 annual meeting of the Comparative and International Education Society (CIES) in Toronto. (Contains 3 notes.)
