An analysis of the objectives of modern language instruction expands on earlier work concerning the "Threshhold Level" of language learning. The first part outlines a model of language instructional objectives more complex and encompassing than those of the threshhold level and examines the nature and instructional incidence of each component of the model. After an introductory section, the report continues with a discussion of the distinction between aims and objectives and of the general aims of education. It considers the educational context of modern language learning and its general aims and objectives. It further defines a framework for looking at the global objectives of modern language learning and examines more closely the specific areas of competence targeted in language instruction: linguistic, sociolinguistic, discourse, strategic, sociocultural, and social. The additional educational objectives of promoting individual autonomy and developing a sense of social responsibility are also considered. (MSE)
