Language Affirmation and Positive Psychology
Palmieri, Nicholas V.
Adult Learning, v19 n1-2 p30-31 Win-Spr 2008
The author shares his experience as a professor teaching effective interpersonal relationships for the power of language or voice affirmation. When he was teaching a class that included students whose first language was Spanish, French, or Creole, the author requested his student to speak in native language during a presentation on the topic of interpersonal relationships. The author learned that his request was not only affirming; it uncovered impressive verbal and nonverbal behaviors, culminating in a deep-felt smile and confident walk. As a result of the experience, the author is convinced regarding the benefits associated with the use of affirmation to generate positive emotions. Here, the author stresses that facilitators of adult learning need to know and mindfully exercise their own strengths by taking their practices to a higher level of teaching. The author advocates for a stewardship approach to nurturing what is good about educators in an effort to enrich the lives of others.
