Identification and Utilization of Employer Requirements for Entry-Level Health Occupations Workers. Final Report.
Zukowski, James J.
The purpose of a research project was to identify employer expectations regarding entry-level competency requirements for selected assistance-level health occupations. Physicians, dentists, and other health professionals reviewed lists of competencies associated with the performance of assistance-level employees in nursing, medical laboratory, and dental services. These employers identified by title the workers who are expected to perform the competencies, frequencies with which the skills are performed, relative importance of the skills, and levels of required training associated with successful performance of the competencies. These eight job titles were investigated: nursing assistant, medical assistant, licensed vocational nurse, dental assistant, dental laboratory technician, dental hygienist, medical laboratory assistant, and medical laboratory technician. The demographic composition of the respondents in each of the three surveys was also analyzed. Following the 40-page narrative are appended materials, including (1) three quarterly reports; (2) the dental auxiliary services, nursing services, and medical laboratory services survey instruments; (3) adjusted frequencies for each competency in the three survey instruments (percentages are provided for each variable--performance requirements, use frequency, relative importance, and training requirements); and (4) a list of common (generic) competencies.
