Child's Play: An Activities and Materials Handbook.
Trencher, Barbara R.
This handbook, the third printing of the original 1976 edition, presents an eclectic combination of activities gathered from parents and teachers of preschool children, with a focus on the process rather than the product of learning. Its goal is the establishment of positive experiences and sound interpersonal relationships between adults and children. The guide contains seven sections; the first (1) discusses classroom space planning and design, covering such topics as activity centers and the quadrant approach. The remaining sections describe activities within different subject areas; (2) arts, with such activities as painting, collages, and puppets; (3) music, with information on instruments, rhythmic chants, and poems; (4) numbers and shapes, with activities on numerals, classification, geometric shapes, and measuring; (5) language arts, containing examples on speaking, listening, reading, and writing; (6) science, covering such topics as the senses, electricity, magnetism, and living things; and (7) cooking, with advice on kitchen preparation and safety, snacks, and recipes. Each section concludes with a list of selected references. An appendix presents guidelines on stages in child development and contains a list of references on early childhood development and education. (EV)
