Family privilege is defined as "strengths and supports gained through primary caring relationships." A generation ago, the typical family included two parents and a bevy of kids living under one roof. Now, every variation of blended caregiving qualifies as family. But over the long arc of human history, a real family was a multigenerational tribal community who shared responsibility for nurturing the young. In this article, a resilience researcher and former youth in care describes the pains of family loss and provides a roadmap for restoring the powerful benefits that result from healthy families.
