Relative Activity of Abdominal Muscles during Commonly Prescribed Strengthening Exercises.
Willett, Gilbert M.; Hyde, Jennifer E.; Uhrlaub, Michael B.; Wendel, Cara L.; Karst, Gregory M.
Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, v15 n4 p480-85 Nov 2001
Examined the relative electromyographic (EMG) activity of upper and lower rectus abdominis (LRA) and external oblique (EOA) muscles during five abdominal strengthening exercises. Isometric and dynamic EMG data indicated that abdominal strengthening exercises activated various abdominal muscle groups. For the LRA and EOA muscle groups, there were significant differences in amounts of EMG activity elicited by the exercise variations tested. (SM)
