Improving Educational Outcomes for Youth in Care. Symposium Summary Report (Washington, DC, February 8, 2002).
Yu, Elisabeth; Day, Pamela; Williams, Millicent
Recognizing that the child welfare, education, and judicial systems are uniquely positioned to support the improvement of educational outcomes for youth in out-of-home care, the Child Welfare League of America and the National Council for Juvenile and Family Court Judges convened a symposium in 2002 to initiate a dialogue among the child welfare, judicial, and education fields and to build consensus about improving the educational outcomes for youth in care. This report summarizes the findings of this symposium, and includes: (1) the keynote address delivered by a former youth in care; (2) findings of a survey of key informants in child welfare, education, and judicial fields; (3) examples of three promising programs and practices that may improve youths' educational outcomes; (4) education of youth in care from the child welfare, education, and judicial perspectives; (5) the creation of a national agenda for the improvement of educational outcomes for youth in care based on the work of cross-discipline teams; and (6) recommendations for the child welfare, educational, and judicial systems to inform practice, program, and policy.
