Instructor Attitudes toward Students: Job Satisfaction and Student Outcomes

The relational teaching approach suggests that instructors should develop positive relationships with students, with benefits including greater job satisfaction. One way to build positive relationships with students involves exhibiting immediacy behaviors. The author examined relationships among professors' attitudes toward students, immediacy behaviors, job satisfaction, and student outcomes. Although liking students was not related to job satisfaction, students were capable of intuiting their professor's attitude toward them, even when immediacy behaviors offered inconsistent information.
