Job Migration: A Collaborative Effort
Wagoner, Cynthia L.
Teaching Music, v19 n6 p28-31 Apr 2012
Music teachers often change jobs several times during their careers. Reasons for job changes vary, but regardless, these changes bring a different set of challenges. Sharing knowledge and learning are part and parcel of collaboration. So what if, as education professionals, music teachers decided to collaborate during job migrations? For all music professionals, job migration should be considered a collaborative effort. Collaborative job migration is a way for music teachers to share with their successors the knowledge of the community, students, and job that has been gained during their tenure. Ultimately, this collaboration is in the best interest of students' musical learning and development. In this article, the author shares her personal experiences as a band director and those of her successor, Bryan Ames, the band director at Plymouth High School in Plymouth, Indiana. Their success story of job migration covers: (1) preparing for the successor; (2) migrating into a new job; and (3) bridging the gap.
