A Study of a Two-Year College and How It Fosters Lifelong Learning and Empowerment
Jansen-Simmermon, Wendy
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of South Dakota
The study of lifelong learning is a study that has deep roots in higher education. The reasons a student seeks further education is important to the overall study of lifelong learning. When a student completes an associate degree and subsequently pursues a higher education degree, it is important to understand the motivation that drives them to participate in additional education. This research delved into the educational experiences students at a small mid- western two-year college had that might have motivated the student onto further education. This study utilized a semi-formal interview structure to ascertain the participants' beliefs about education prior to, at, and after attending this college. This qualitative phenomenological study included interviewing 10 graduates who successfully completed a bachelor's or higher education degree after completing their associate degree at Kilian Community College. The participants of this study indicated that their experiences at this small college sparked an interest for further education; they sought further education for additional fulfillment in their life; and they were transformed into continuous or lifelong learners. The various aspects of student services, faculty, and administration work in conjunction in order to provide the supportive environment participants need to continue their education and become self-directed in their further studies.
