Informal Science Learning in the Formal Classroom
Walsh, Lori; Straits, William
Science and Children, v51 n9 p54-58 Jul 2014
In this article the authors share advice from the viewpoints of both a formal and informal educator that will help teachers identify the right Informal Science Institutions (ISIs)--institutions that specialize in learning that occurs outside of the school setting--to maximize their students' learning and use informal education to their advantage. There are a variety of ISIs available and ready to contribute to students' learning. Each have their own benefits and offerings ranging from class field trips, to professional development workshops, to onsite outreach. Teachers may need to do some research to find the perfect match between their local ISI and their students, but the students will be rewarded with tailored learning experiences. As teachers plan their science units, they should consider all types of ISIs and know that their informal partners are waiting to inspire them and their students in innovative ways.
