The Corporate University and Training: Return on Investment
Newell, Marshall D.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
With a global marketplace, companies are seeking ways to manage knowledge with tools, such as the corporate university toward gaining a competitive advantage. Research has identified a common goal is to sustain competitive advantage. With a competitive advantage, a company may achieve a higher profitability. Thus far, research has provided limited consideration to the relationship of learning & development/training (L&D/T) investment and type of corporate university in how a company can sustain a higher profitability. The research examines L&D/T with a typology of the corporate university. However, determining the L&D/T investment relative to the type of corporate university poses a challenging proposition. The study utilizes historical financial data for the 30 companies in The Dow. Utilizing a corporate university typology categorization, a discriminant analysis examines for net profit (NP) and gross revenue (GR). The findings of this study showed L&D/T investment does not improve net profit (NP) and gross revenue (GR) for a company in The Dow. A larger sample, such as, the Standard & Poor's 500 index, might reveal a significant positive L&D/T relationship between corporate university investment and company profitability. With a positive relationship, a corporate university L&D/T investment generalization might be possible. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
