Solo school librarians are the air traffic controllers of the library world, serving hundreds, if not thousands, of students. They are responsible for a book budget, technology resources, orientation and research classes, book talks, and reading promotions, as well as professional development for teachers, guiding them in effective integration of all of the above in students' learning. What else can be done to support teachers and students given limited time and limited budgets? How can librarians create greater value for their schools, while keeping their library programs secure, and their expertise valued by colleagues? In this article, the authors discuss how to leverage less tangible resources. As librarians consider how to acquire resources in a time of contracting budgets, they must consider their selves as their most precious resource. By investing time professionally, both in and out of the building, they will become embedded in a network of learners. They will become integral to initiatives, collaboration, and student achievement.
