This text presents the principles of the sport of orienteering (navigating through an unknown area using a map and compass as guide) and is useful to beginners, experienced orienteers, and "armchair" orienteers. Included in the text are: (1) a glossary of key words; (2) a basic introduction to, and history of, the sport; (3) description of the various types of orienteering meets; (4) introduction to compass use; (5) necessary equipment; (6) orienteering techniques (course plotting, map reading, route choice, aiming off, etc.); (7) training techniques; (8) organizing a meet--course setting, map making, and meet direction; and (9) "spreading the word" about orienteering and orienteering organizations. Appendixes detail (1) U.S. and Canadian orienteering clubs, (2) topographic map symbols, (3) black and white map symbols, (4) control descriptions, and (5) information and equipment resources. (MJB)
