Miyazaki, Yasuo; Bodenhorn, Nancy; Zalaquett, Carlos; Ng, Kok-Mun
College Student Journal, v42 n3 p795-806 Sep 2008
Literature on coping strategies and assessments has not previously included international students, who make up approximately 4% of university students. Results of an Internet survey of 555 graduate and undergraduate international students in U.S. universities are reported. The survey included the Brief COPE, a widely used assessment of coping skills. The resulting factorial structure is different for this international student population than for the original U.S. sample, which indicated 14 factors with 2 items each. The structure found in this population included 7 factors. Three of the factors, comprising 18 of the items, are consistent with current literature on coping styles: Positive coping, Support seeking, and Denial. The four other factors, also found in the original structure, with 2 or 3 items in each factor, are Religion, Self-blame, Humor, and Substance use. Implications for future research and practice with international students are indicated. (Contains 4 tables.)
