Interior Design Standards in the Secondary FCS Curriculum
Katz, Shana H.; Smith, Bettye P.
Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences, v98 n4 p56-58 2006
This article deals with a study on interior design standards in the secondary FCS curriculum. This study assessed the importance FCS teachers placed on content standards in the interior design curriculum to help determine the amount of time and emphasis to place on the units within the courses. A cover letter and questionnaire were sent electronically for teachers to respond. Teachers reported teaching Interior Design at their schools with five units of instruction in Introduction to Interior Design, namely: (1) World of Interior Design; (2) Social, Psychological and Economic Influences; (3) Trends and Issues; (4) Elements of Design; and (5) Interior Design Principles, as well as four units of instruction in Interior Design Fundamentals, namely: (1) Space and Traffic Patterns; (2) Color Theory; (3) Drawing for Interior Design; and (4) Blueprint Reading. This study recommended that teachers continue to develop and implement contemporary curricula that reflect the importance of content standards.
