Colleges and Employees Explore Ways to Provide for Healthy Retirements
Dotinga, Randy
Chronicle of Higher Education, v54 n45 pB29 Jul 2008
Faculty members and administrators should not assume that their colleges will pick up their medical bills during their retirement. Medicare benefits are not guaranteed that they will remain the same. Experts believe that the Medicare trust fund that pays for retiree hospital care will go bankrupt by 2019. As such, insurance experts are now urging colleges to explore other ways of providing medical benefits for retirees. Many institutions are now trying to pay for future benefits now. Instead of promising to pick up a percentage of employees' health-insurance premium after they retire, institutions are putting money aside for their employees to invest, so they can use it for covering their expenses.
