Valuing Support Groups

For people living with or caring for someone with a disability, being able to talk to someone who can relate to their feelings of frustration during difficult times, offer practical advice on an issue, or even understand the importance of a small success, can make a difference. Support groups are a mainstay for individuals coping with daily stresses, navigating service systems, and seeking information about a disability. Support groups are forums (either in person or online) where people who understand each other's experiences can gather to share knowledge or to express difficult or confusing emotions without fear of judgment. Groups can range from an informal gathering of families living in a local community to groups sponsored by an organization. In the autism community, support groups are a vital aspect of an overall network of support and services. Because autism is a lifelong developmental disability in which the needs of the person--from early intervention, through school age, to the transition into adulthood and beyond--are continually changing, families are continually navigating novel systems of services to meet those needs. Just when a parent understands one system, they are thrust into another system, where the rules have changed. This article discusses the vital role support groups play for families at all stages--whether it's a family receiving a new diagnosis, considering a particular therapy, advocating for special education services, or finding appropriate employment for a person with autism. Support group members offer understanding, shared experiences, and first-hand knowledge.
