Traumatic Brain Injury in Children and Adolescents: A Sourcebook for Teachers and Other School Personnel. Second Edition.
Tyler, Janet Siantz; Mira, Mary P.
This book is designed to provide educators with the requisite information to successfully meet the needs of students with traumatic brain injury (TBI). It focuses particularly on students (preschoolers through adolescents) whose injuries are moderate to severe and who are expected to suffer educationally significant residual impairments. It provides an introduction to the characteristics and needs of these students relating to their schools. While the information contained in the book is specifically about students who have experienced TBI from external physical force, much of it is also applicable to those with other acquired injuries, including cerebral vascular accidents, near-drownings, brain infections, and brain tumors. Specific chapters address: (1) facts about TBI in children and adolescents, including incidence of TBI, levels of severity of TBI, causes of TBI, and risk factors; (2) developmental aspects of TBI; (3) immediate and long-term effects of TBI; (4) psychosocial effects of TBI; (5) continuum of treatment of TBI, components of a comprehensive program, how schools can interact with hospitals, and issues in financing the rehabilitation program; (6) planning for school reentry; (7) assessment of the student with TBI; (8) programming for students with TBI; (9) planning for transitions; (10) families of children and adolescents with TBI; and (11) implications for future directions. Appendices include a physical facilities and planning checklist, a case manager checklist for school reentry, and an annotated bibliography. (Contains 52 references.) (CR)
