The Applied and Industrial Mathematics Program with Example Project: Efficient Routing for Meals on Wheels in the Shenandoah Valley
Axvig, Nathan; David, John; Falcetti, Alex
PRIMUS, v25 n7 p563-577 2015
The Applied and Industrial Mathematics program partners applied mathematics students with businesses, governments, laboratories, and agencies to solve real problems. We will discuss the logistics of the program and give advice on starting and running similar programs. We also give a detailed example of a specific project, namely our work with the local Meals on Wheels program. The problem of routing the drivers who deliver meals to home-bound senior citizens was solved by writing user-friendly software that employs a genetic algorithm. Both anecdotal evidence and simulations are provided to illustrate the advantages of our method.
