The ADA and IDEA Basics: Inclusion of Children with Disabilities
Motwani, Mona
Exchange: The Early Childhood Leaders' Magazine Since 1978, n174 p14-19 Mar-Apr 2007
This article discusses the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The ADA is a federal civil rights law that was passed in 1990 with the aim of securing equal rights for persons with disabilities in the employment, housing, government, transportation, and public accommodation contexts. It was passed in an effort to provide equal opportunities to people with disabilities. IDEA is an entitlement law that provides early intervention and special education services to children, ages 0-21, who qualify for them. It guarantees children with disabilities the same access to education as children who do not have disabilities. The author presents two inclusive child care projects that support parents and providers so that they can provide quality, inclusive child care for children who have special needs. These projects are often funded by private donors, non-profit organizations, and state and local government funds. (Contains 20 endnotes and 2 resources.)
