This report summarizes the status of students (ages 5 to 15) with disabilities placed in either special schools or ordinary schools in England local education authorities (LEAs) for the years 1988 through 1992. A summary notes some trends, including: a small increase from 1991 to 1992 in special school placements; wide variations in where LEAs place children with disabilities; and 42 percent of pupils with special needs statements placed in ordinary schools (32 percent in ordinary classes and 10 percent in special classes). Tables and graphs detail the data by both overall trends and by individual LEAs. Tables and graphs document percentages of pupils in special schools and percentages of pupils with statements in ordinary schools. A conclusion notes that the differences between LEAs in the percentage of pupils in special schools is as large as it was in the two previous studies.
