Book, Film, Television: An International Comparison of National Self-Sufficiency in Three Media.
Jokela, Mikko
This study was conducted to compare national self-sufficiency in two media--book and film--to determine to what extent books and films in 39 countries are of domestic and foreign origin, and to find the direction of flow. Statistical findings are compared with findings from a 1973 study on the structure and origin of television programmes in 51 countries by Dr. Tapio Varis. Most statistical data were taken from the 1970 UNESCO yearbooks. The study found that (1) the big industrialized countries can afford a relatively high level of national self-sufficiency in all three media; (2) English is the language from which 41 percent of all translations were made in 1970; (3) the United States is the leading source for importers of films and television programs; (4) the flow of all media generally goes from the big countries to many small countries; (5) the book is a domestic medium everywhere; (6) film is an international medium; and (7) television is a national medium. A bibliography is attached. (Author/KP)
