Soft Skills Training: An Annotated Guide to Selected Programs.
Leigh, Wilhelmina A.; Lee, Deitra H.; Lindquist, Malinda A.
This guidebook presents data from a two-part study that reviewed existing literature on soft work skills, defined soft skills, and determined their importance to employers. The study also identified programs that were teaching those skills. Researchers contacted 90 organizations, asking for detailed written materials about themselves. The 53 that offered soft skills training are included in this report. The guide presents working definitions of four types of soft skills: thinking/cognitive skills, oral communication skills, personal qualities/work ethic, and interpersonal/teamwork skills. It lists each organization, offering information on the organization's nature and mission; the specific set of soft skills for which training is offered; and the characteristics of each training program (e.g., structure, length, and target population). The programs at a glance section offers abbreviated information in matrix form about all 53 programs. A program summaries section presents contact and location information, describes the program, and includes duration of training, amount of time per week, followup services, and stipend/wages for participants. A list of programs by subject, population, and state is included. (SM)
