Architect for Research on Gender and Community Colleges
Lester, Jaime
Community College Journal of Research and Practice, v33 n9 p725-730 2009
A quick search in the "Community College Journal of Research and Practice" for Barbara Townsend's name produces 62 entries. A handful of those entries are the articles that Barbara has authored, but many more are articles that cite her work. Another search on the Web of Science database that tracks citations in a specific set of peer-reviewed journals results in several dozen citations for work on transfer and other topics related to community colleges. Moreover, Barbara's "New Directions for Community Colleges" on gender and power continues to sell almost 15 years after the 1995 release (Townsend, 1995). These are just a few examples of the ways that Barbara has influenced community college research. One area of research that stands out in Barbara's dossier is her continued focus on issues related to gender in the community college. The dedication made apparent through her decades of scholarly productivity and leadership makes it evident that she has continuously brought to the fore of discussions questions about the equity within community colleges. In this article, the author discusses the impact of Barbara's scholarship on issues related to gender in community colleges. The author focuses on five areas where Barbara has contributed to the academic conversation surrounding these issues and served as a role model to all faculty who examine equity within higher education. The five areas are: (1) establishing frameworks for gender equity research; (2) giving a voice to women in community colleges; (3) questioning acceptance of feminist scholarship; (4) being an optimistic and fair critic; and (5) representing the values of feminist work.
