Technology and its uses have undergone significant change in the past several decades. Although the technology of 2010 has changed in ways unimaginable in 1960, the promise of technology today is similar to the promise of technology then. The achievement of student learning seems more likely to lie in the minds of the people who use the technology and in how they implement the tool rather than in some inherent quality of the tool. Although each generation promises that this new tool will increase efficiency of teaching and improve student learning, the reality is that learning is a human process. Technology can enable more possibilities. Technology can remove some barriers to learning (even as new barriers are introduced) and can provide real-world in-course experience to the extent the discipline in question relies on technology. Technology can enable more efficient communication (which begs the question of its worth). Technology can reduce or transfer to the tool some of the tedious tasks involved in education. The novelty of a technological tool can focus student attention for at least a while. Technology does not, however, release the humans in the equation (teachers and students) from responsibility for thoughtful consideration, selection, implementation, and assessment of the technology, or from ultimate responsibility for success in the learning process.
