In 1973 an innovative, interdisciplinary global studies course was instituted at a secondary school in Ontario. Designed for advanced students at the grade 13 level, the course emphasized science, language arts, and mathematics issues in terms of the world's environmental and social problems. Rationale for the course included an awareness of the growing interdependence of all nations in the world, and the interrelatedness of man, the physical environment, and man-made environment. Course goals included helping students interpret current events and world problems, and instilling appreciation of the reciprocal relationships among global problems such as overpopulation, resource depletion, and political tension. Five broad topics formed the basis of the syllabus: numbers (population), migration and urbanization, man in conflict, global patterns of resource utilization, and the new world. Detailed outlines are presented for each of these topics, as well as a table showing time schedules, resources, and teaching approaches. A list of references identifies 116 books and 39 filmstrips, but the author stresses the importance of using additional core material available in school libraries and new resources which are continually being published.
