Collaborative Field Trips: An Opportunity to Connect Practice with Pedagogy
Krahenbuhl, Kevin
Geography Teacher, v11 n1 p17-24 2014
This article discusses a field-based study conducted at a small university in southeastern South Dakota in the spring of 2013 during a course in geography for elementary teachers. The course was designed to review and go into depth with college-level content including both human and physical fields of geography. Additionally, it integrates pedagogical strategies, lesson planning, and experiences to apply these concepts to both state-level and the NCGEs "Geography for Life" standards (Heffron and Downs 2012). The geography faculty coordinated with a local elementary school and a regional geographic-oriented institution. During a field trip, elementary students participated in a series of geographical learning experiences designed to develop their geographic skills. This experiment underscored the real potential for collaboration among educational institutions in practicing geography. In this experiential learning trip, college students, elementary classes, and the university participated in each of the four facets of geographic education. In doing such action-based research, field trips have been and should continue to be an indispensable component to a sound geographic learning experience.
