Improving Usage Statistics Processing for a Library Consortium: The Virtual Library of Virginia's Experience
Matthews, Tansy E.
Journal of Electronic Resources Librarianship, v21 n1 p37-47 2009
This article describes the development of the Virtual Library of Virginia (VIVA). The VIVA statistics-processing system remains a work in progress. Member libraries will benefit from the ability to obtain the actual data from the VIVA site, rather than just the summaries, so a project to make these data available is currently being planned. The process of loading the sourcedata into the Access database remains problematic, as changes to the sourcedata must then be corrected in the database as well, if the data have already been loaded. Overall, however, the revisions to statistics management have been extremely successful, and the initial goals for the project have been met: Both the investment of staff time and the margin for human error have been reduced, and the ability to quickly produce usage reports spanning several years has proven extremely useful. Additionally, the new reporting format has been received positively by VIVA members, and it is now possible to provide more data, such as monthly title level usage, than was previously possible, in a more flexible manner.
