Social Camouflage: Interpreting Male Student Veterans' Behavior for Residence Life Professionals
Livingston, Wade G.; Scott, David A.; Havice, Pamela A.; Cawthon, Tony W.
Journal of College and University Student Housing, v39 n1 p176-185 2012
The term "camouflage" implies obscurity and concealment. Male student veterans who return from the military often employ a social camouflage; though some may reveal and discuss their military experience, their overriding objective is to blend in, have a "normal" college experience, and graduate. This creates challenges for housing professionals and student staff. Hence, the overarching questions explored in this article are "How do male student veterans interact within the campus community, and what role does housing provide for these student veterans?" We answer these questions using the body of literature on student veterans and one particular qualitative research study on their social transitions.
