A Reconsideration of "College English," November 1974: Separatists Unite! (But Has the Assimilation Begun?)
Pruitt, John
English Journal, v101 n1 p80-82 Sep 2011
In 1974, Ohio repealed its sodomy laws; Massachusetts Representative Elaine Noble became the first openly gay individual elected to a state legislature; and the National Gay Task Force collaborated with US Representatives Bella Abzug (D-NY) and Edward Koch (D-NY) to introduce the Equality Act of 1974 to ban discrimination against lesbians, gay men, unmarried persons, and women in employment, housing, and public accommodations. It was also the year that "College English" published a special issue on "The Homosexual Imagination," guest edited by Louie Crew and Rictor Norton--an issue that was groundbreaking and angry, just like 1974. In this article, the author looks back at an important LGBT-focused issue of "College English."
