The Effect of Home Learning Kits on the Reading Readiness of Disadvantaged Kindergarten Children.

The Kindergarten Home Learning Kit was developed to ameliorate the educational deficit of disadvantaged kindergarten children by providing toys and learning materials to work with in the home. Each of the eight sequential kits also contains an illustrated instructional letter to the parents. Two groups of 25 disadvantaged kindergarten children participated in the study, one group provided with the kits and the other not. Two forms of the Metropolitan Readiness Test were used as pretests and posttests of reading readiness. The group using the kits scored significantly better on the posttest than did the control group in vocabulary, listening, matching, and number concepts. No significant difference was found between the two groups in the areas of alphabet knowledge and copying. It was concluded that environmental intervention in the form of packaged educational materials and toys to be used in the home might be an effective extension of the public school kindergarten curriculum.
