A University's Approach to Delinquency Prevention. The Adolescent Diversion Project, Urbana and Champaign, Illinois. An Exemplary Project.
Ku, Richard; Blew, Carol H.
The Urbana-Champaign Adolescent Diversion Project (ADP) involves children, parents, professors, graduate and under-graduate students, policemen, teachers, and community social service workers in a cooperative effort to divert youngsters in legal jeopardy from the juvenile justice system. Its three goals are: (1) to provide juveniles with an alternative to formal court proceedings through counseling and social assistance; (2) to give university students practical experience by involving them in the service delivery process; and (3) to study delinquency within a controlled research framework. This publication describes in detail the background and history of the program and the roles of the various participants, as well as giving detailed research information. The overall program was considered a successful venture in the simultaneous use of research, treatment and delivery of a social service by a university. (Author/BP)
