An Assessment of the Academic ESL Department's Curriculums and ESL Student Performance, 1983-2000: A Qualitative Quantitative Report. Spring 2000 Sabbatical Report.
Massaro, Alessandro
The goal of this report is to identify factors that led to success for L2 (second language learning or acquisition) students at Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) (Massachusetts). The author intends to use the results of the study to write proposals to secure funding for the success of more L2 students. He originally intended to read a total of 227 transcripts from the three different curricula delivered by the English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) department since 1983. However, because of the high attrition rate, the author read 512 transcripts in order to demonstrate the accuracy of the attrition rate. Highlights of the study include: (1) the author read 157 transcripts of ESL students enrolled in 1985 when the ESL department delivered a traditional grammar-based ESL curriculum with no tutors. Thirty-two percent never took the course and 54% never passed a college-level content course. The author notes that he read the transcripts by course section, and in one section 19 out of 28 moved on to college-level content courses, while in another section 15 out of 26 did not move beyond ESL courses; and (2) the author read 138 transcripts of students enrolled in 1991, when the ESL department delivered a more challenging grammar-based curriculum. Twenty-four percent did not move on to the next course level, and 45% never attempted or passed college content courses. This was an improvement form the 1985 cohort. (Contains research forms, tables, and 13 references, including conferences and workshops.) (NB)
