This manual aids health professionals in recognizing and treating pesticide poisonings. Suggested treatments are appropriate for implementation in the small hospitals and clinics which usually receive the victims of pesticide poisoning. Classes of compounds covered include: (1) organophosphate cholinesterase-inhibiting pesticides; (2) carbamate cholinesterase-inhibiting pesticides; (3) solid organochlorine pesticides; (4) pentachlorophenol; (5) nitrophenolic and nitrocresolic herbicides; (6) chlorophenoxy compounds; (7) paraquat and diquat; (8) dithiocarbamates and thiocarbamates; (9) pyrethrum, pyrethrins, pyrethroids and piperonyl butoxide; (10) arsenical pesticides; (11) rodenticides; (12) fumigants; (13) miscellaneous pesticides of high toxicity that are rarely use; and (14) miscellaneous pesticides of low or moderate toxicity that are widely used. For each class of compounds, the manual gives general chemical structure, a list of commercial product names arranged in order of descending toxicity, details of toxicology, frequent symptoms and signs of poisoning, confirmation of diagnosis, and detailed instructions for treatment.
