Creating a Safe Zone: LGBTQ Work in NCTE
Henkin, Roxanne
English Journal, v101 n1 p76-79 Sep 2011
Reading through her files, the author takes a journey back in time to 1991 when a few lesbians and gay men met in a conference room at the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Annual Convention in Seattle to discuss issues relating to their lives and their teaching. It was at this meeting that NCTE first discussed forming a new group that became the Assembly on Gay and Lesbian Academic Issues Awareness, AGLAIA. Members of AGLAIA have grown and learned many lessons over the last 20 years. They are no longer called AGLAIA; they have changed their name to the NCTE Gay-Straight Educators' Alliance. The author offers a brief history of the NCTE Gay-Straight Educators' Alliance.
