"Reaching the Hip-Hop Generation." The MEE Symposium (New York, New York, March 1-2, 1993). Final (Symposium Proceedings) Report.
MEE Productions Inc., Philadelphia, PA. Research Div.
This final report attempts to capture the work and atmosphere of the recent symposium convened by Motivational Educational Entertainment, Inc. (MEE), a black-owned communications research, consulting, and video production company. In its commitment to helping urban youth, MEE conducted a study of the "hip-hop" generation and its alienation from not only white mainstream America, but also from much of the black community. The symposium provided a forum and structure for debate about what should be done to reach urban youth. The keynote address by Johnnetta B. Cole outlined challenges for adults and for the hip-hop generation themselves. The keynote speech was followed by the MEE video "Reaching the Hip-Hop Generation." Panel discussions and working sessions on the second day included teens in the discussions of the video and the MEE report on urban youth. Recommendations for further education and additional symposia are included. Appendixes contain press articles, ratings from symposium evaluation sheets, and a summary of evaluation forms (comments) from symposium evaluation sheets). (SLD)
