The purpose of this case/phenomenological study was to examine a collegiate administrative search and selection process and the experience of an African American woman who was selected to the position of chancellor. A case concerning the search process of a regional campus of Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana was identified and chosen. In-depth interviews were conducted with three participants in the search and selection process. Each individual played a significant and separate role during various phases of the search and selection process. Results indicated that there were four key themes to emerge from the investigation: diversity issues; the search and selection process; candidate preparations; and interview execution. As a result of this research and its emergent themes, several recommendations were made to higher institutions seeking to diversify their administrative teams, search committees that are formed to identify potential candidates, African American women who desire to hold administrative positions in higher education, and to future researchers.
