This article describes Heart to Heart Art, an after-school program developed for homeless children and youth at the YWCA in Spokane, Washington. Pre-service teacher candidates from a local university create meaningful activities that engage homeless students in visual art, music, drama, cooking, and community service. Heart to Heart Art was created to offer a nurturing, supportive climate for all students. The creation of art can foster a sense of belonging, success, and creativity, as long as students have the freedom to follow their own inspirations and develop original designs. Quality after-school programs can provide hope for homeless students, families, and schools. They can offer structured activities for youth, providing positive interactions with healthy adults who can serve as role models. Children can develop positive relationships with peers and adults and become engaged in meaningful activities during the after school hours. The Heart to Heart program offers a sanctuary for homeless children, providing an anchor of stability in an otherwise unstable life.
