Pediatric Music Therapy.
Lathom-Radocy, Wanda B.
This book on music therapy includes relevant medical, psychological, and developmental information to help service providers, particularly music therapists, and parents to understand children with disabilities. The first two chapters describe the process of assessment and delineation of goals in music therapy that leads to the design of the music therapy portion of the Individualized Education Program or care program. The remaining chapters describe each population of children to be served, with emphasis on medical and psychological characteristics unique to each population, and specific goals and procedures to be used in music therapy. Populations addressed include students with mental retardation, with emotional and/or behavior disorders, with speech and language impairments, with hearing impairments, with visual impairments, with orthopedic impairments, and with other health impairments. The CAMEOS model is used in this book to address the child's communication, academic, motor, emotional, organizational, and social needs and ways these may be addressed through music therapy. The CAMEOS model is designed to meet the needs of children with disabilities in different settings, including homebound, in regular classes, in resource rooms or special education programs, or in hospital care. The final chapter addresses legal considerations for the music therapist. An author index and subject index are included. (Chapters include references.) (Author/CR)
