Everybody Has a Body: Science from Head to Toe. Activities Book for Teachers of Children Ages 3-6.
Rockwell, Robert E.; And Others
This science activity book contains age-appropriate activities that will enable children ages 3-6 to explore one of the first environments they encounter, their own body. The knowledge gained in these activities can be interspersed with pre-science skills, health information, literature, self-concept development, and body awareness. Each chapter begins with a collection of facts and background information related to the chapter topic. Within each chapter, the activities are grouped by body part or function, with an approximate age-appropriateness level given for the activity. Each activity is introduced with a brief descriptive paragraph. A list of words and ideas for encouraging children to talk about experiences, ask questions, and describe what they are thinking is included, as well as a list of items necessary to complete the activity. Step-by-step instructions for each activity are given and ideas to expand the activities are also included. Nursery rhymes, poetry, thoughts, ideas, and interesting bits of information are interspersed throughout the book, along with examples of children's art work. The eight chapters are: (1) "Keeping in Touch: Using Your Hands and Feet"; (2) "Huggers and Hoppers: How Arms and Legs Help You"; (3) "Here's Looking at You: How Eyes See"; (4) "Listen Up: A World of Sounds"; (5) "Your Nose Knows: It's More Than a Smeller Teller"; (6) "Open Wide and Say 'Ahh': A Look Inside Your Mouth"; (7) "The Inside Story: A Look at Guts and Stuff"; and (8) "Head to Toe: Everything Goes Together."
