Global Responses to Potential Climate Change: A Simulation.
Williams, Mary Louise; Mowry, George
This interdisciplinary five-day unit provides students with an understanding of the issues in the debate on global climate change. Introductory lessons enhance understanding of the "greenhouse gases" and their sources with possible global effects of climate change. Students then roleplay negotiators from 10 nations in a simulation of the International Negotiating Committee (INC) for a Framework Convention on Climate Change, as a part of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Students explore the possible areas where agreements could be the basis for the writing of a global treaty to stabilize or reduce greenhouse gases. The postscript and update sections explain the scientific research that led to the IPCC Summary as reported to the global community December 1995. Attachments provide all necessary student materials including: (1) "Getting to Know Your Nation"; (2) "Comparative Data for Nations" (table); (3) "Background Information on Global Climate Change"; (4) "Sources of Greenhouse Gases from Human Activity" (table); (5) "Global Climate Change--Accountability by Nation"; (6) "Simulation: The Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee"; (7) "Negotiating Positions"; and (8) "Postscript and Update."
