A Fundamental Breakdown. Part II: Manipulative Skills
Townsend, J. Scott; Mohr, Derek J.
Teaching Elementary Physical Education, v16 n6 p24-35 Nov 2005
In the May, 2005, issue of "TEPE," the "Research to Practice" section initiated a two-part series focused on assessing fundamental locomotor and manipulative skills. The series was generated in response to research by Pappa, Evanggelinou, & Karabourniotis (2005), recommending that curricular programming in physical education at the elementary school level emphasize development of fundamental skills. To support the implementation of a developmental curriculum, the articles in this series provide critical features, instructional cues, and complexity variables within sample assessment instruments. Set 1 contains critical features, instructional cues, and a graphic representation of each manipulative skill. This information enhances the clarity of communication between student and teacher when presenting tasks, demonstrating skills, and providing feedback. Each skill is accompanied by a Movement Complexity Continuum, suggesting variables that can be used to make learning tasks for each skill more or less challenging. These pages are formatted so that they can be photocopied, placed back-to-back on index cards, and laminated. The second set is comprised of example learning tasks for each manipulative skill. Additionally, a data collection instrument is provided for each skill. (Contains a list of 2 resources.)
