Teachable Moment: Google Earth Takes Us There
Williams, Ann; Davinroy, Thomas C.
Change: The Magazine of Higher Learning, v47 n1 p62-65 2015
In the current educational climate, where clearly articulated learning objectives are required, it is clear that the spontaneous teachable moment still has its place. Authors Ann Williams and Thomas Davinroy think that instructors from almost any discipline can employ Google Earth as a tool to take advantage of teachable moments through the addition of spatial contextualization. With Google Earth, the classroom is open to the world and becomes a training-ground where students themselves can influence the learning objectives and explore ways of reaching them. By their interest and questions they prompt teachers to provide the examples and tools and teachers help them to move toward independent learning.
