Geography as a discipline has a long and healthy history in South Australia. Due to the passion of individual educators and the activities of the Geography Teachers Association of South Australia (GTASA) since its foundation in 1936, South Australia has experienced ongoing curriculum development and indeed innovation in the geographical studies in schools (GTASA, 2005). This paper outlines the status quo of Geography in 2005 in South Australia and comments on the possible futures for the subject in the state. The authors focus on the Department of Education and Children's Services (DECS) and the Senior Secondary Assessment Board of South Australia (SSABSA) curriculum directions with regards to geographical education. References are also made to the Catholic Education and Independent Schools sectors of education in the State to give an overview of the status quo. Before outlining the status quo, the authors highlight several critical developments since the 1980s which have impacted on the place of Geography in schools. (Contains 1 figure and 2 tables.)
