The Post Title IX Female Athlete in the Media. Things are Changing, but How Much?
Kane, Mary Jo
Journal of Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, v60 n3 p58-62 Mar 1989
Gender role conformity restricts the sport participation of females. Research examining media images and messages regarding the female athlete is reviewed. It reveals two themes: female athletes and sports events are underreported and underrepresented throughout the mass media, and stereotypic presentation of female athletes trivializes the importance of women's sport.
